NEW YORK : KEI Nishikori became the first man to advance to the US Open second round as the 2014 finalist beat qualifier Marco Trungelliti who was forced to retire with the Japanese leading 6-1, 4-1 on Monday. Nishikori’s serve clicked from the start and the seventh seed won 90 percent of his first-serve points while never facing a break point against the Argentine in 47 minutes on Grandstand. Next up for Nishikori is a second-round clash with Thiago Monteiro or Bradley Klahn.

Raonic withdraws due to glute injury: CANADIAN world number 22 Milos Raonic has pulled out of the US Open with a glute injury, tournament organisers said. Raonic, whose 2019 season has been hit by injuries, has not competed since he retired from a second round match in Montreal during a US Open tune-up in early August. The 28-year-old former Wimbledon finalist has been limited to 11 events this year due to both back and knee problems. Raonic, who has now missed three of the last seven Grand Slams, was supposed to play Chile’s Nicolas Jarry in a first-round clash on Monday but his place will be taken by lucky loser Kamil Majchrzak of Poland.
