NURTURE TALENT
   Date :06-Aug-2019

WHEN former President Mr. Pranab Mukherjee said that graduates from premier educational institutions like IIT and IIM should not be selling some big company’s detergents, there was a tinge of sadness. Sadness because such a world class talent is being wasted in doing jobs which could be done even by persons with lesser skills. It is in fact a colossal loss for the country that such talented people are not encouraged to do basic research in their field of specialisation. On the contrary the emphasis is on getting fat paying jobs which may not have any relevance to their skills and scholarship. Mr. Mukherjee was right when he said that for talented people to devote to basic research and innovation, a proper environment needs to be created in educational institutions all over the country to reap benefits from their fundamental work. What is happening is that such talent seeks align shores for proper ambience to carry on their basic research work. While the country which offers such facilities benefits, it remains a loss for India.

ON THE MARK

THE 3-game Twenty20 series against the West Indies has ended on expected lines with India carrying their World Cup form, albeit with a bit of rusty performances. A stuttering victory on Saturday was followed by a convincing one on Sunday, marking the quick improvement in thinking and strategies by the Indian team. However, one fact remains unchanged from the World Cup in England -- top order’s crucial role. The fear of the top order batsmen having an off day put paid to Indian hopes in the semi-final against New Zealand. This short series has yet again emphasised the need of one of the top three assuming the role of a pivot to anchor Indian innings. That Rohit Sharma’s wonderful touch still continues is a good news for India, but at the same time the opener needs solid backing from the other end. The little concern that can be wiped out easily is the dip in Virat Kohli’s immense hunger for big scores. He is not a flop but with hopes largely sitting on his shoulders, India needs the master in Kohli to turn up.
