Bhilai Steel Plant’s (BSP’s) Blast Furnace-8, ‘Mahamaya’ on Monday achieved the milestone of 3 Million Tonnes (MT) in cumulative production of hot metal. The feat was achieved in 585 days, which is 101 days earlier than RSP’s furnace, ‘Durga’ and 156 days prior to IISCO’s blast furnace, ‘Kalyani’, both furnaces of similar capacity as that of ‘Mahamaya’. The day brought back memories of the historic moment when the modern furnace was installed as part of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) MODEX programme for Bhilai on February 2, 2018.

The first hot metal flowed out on February 4, 2018. Members of Blast Furnace-8 (BF-8) and all associated shops and departments gathered in large numbers at BF 8 on Tuesday to celebrate the achievement of 3 MT milestone. Congratulating the team Mahamaya and all associated departments for becoming the fastest in Steel Authority of India Limited to cross the milestone in spite of the upstream and downstream constraints, BSP CEO Anirban Dasgupta said that the feat becomes more important since there have been no accidents during the entire period.

The CEO also expressed faith in the collective of BF-8 and associated shops. He also hailed the initiative of ‘Team Mahamaya’ in donating 50 units of blood at the blood bank of JLN Hospital on the day they achieved the 3 MT milestone. Addressing the members of what he described as the ‘Greater Team Mahamaya’ including supporting shops and central agencies, ED (Works) P K Dash also hailed the fact that the 3 Million Tonnes milestone has been achieved without any accidents taking place. He urged the collective to aim higher now.

A big cake was ceremonially cut by Dasgupta to mark the special moments. Among senior officers present during the ceremonial celebration were B P Nayak, ED (Finance); S K Basar, ED (MM); Manas Biswas, ED (Mines); Dr S K Issar, Director I/c (M and HS); K K Singh, ED (P & A) and senior officers. A blood donation camp was arranged in JLN Hospital, Sector 9 Hospital and 15 employees donated blood. A plantation ceremony was also organised on Tuesday near Boria gate where saplings were planted by CEO and other senior officers and members of BF-8 team.
