BMC suspends officials over Khatlapura boat capsize tragedy

The Bhopal Municipal Corporation suspended officials for their lenient attitude over safety compliance at Khatlapura immersion ghat. Ironically, Bhopal Municipal Commissioner Vijay Datta inspected Khatlapura immersion site on Thursday and strict directions were given to ensure safety measures. As per eye-witnesses, the eceased were not even wearing life jackets and no official was there on the site to regulate safety measures. The suspended officers include Fire Station Incharge of Pul Bogda Sajid Khan and City Sub Engineer, Khatlapura ghat, R K Saxena. As per directions given by BMC, divers were supposed to be deployed at immersion sites in order to counter any adverse or unfortunate incidents and fire brigade was also supposed to be stationed. Fire safety squad was supposed to be stationed at Sehore Naka, Dhobighat, Khatlapura, Kalighat, Talaiyya, Hatahikheda, Shahura, Intkhedi, Malikhedi, Hatahikheda. Around nine areas have been identified as immersion sites this year. For big idols, Prempura Ghat was identified and for smaller idols Khalapura ghat was designated. The immersion sites allocated for Ganesha immersion included Intkhedi, Hatahikheda, Khatlapura, Shahpura, Kaliyasot, Prempura, Rani Kamlapati. Divers, crane and additional boats, proper lighting arrangements to counter emergency situations were done only on papers. During the time of incident, adequate divers were not there on the spot. Nodal officers at each ghat were instructed on compliance of green waste, dry waste segregation but they were not available for 24 hours to monitor the situation, claim locals. Last year, nodal officers were assigned at each immersion site and officials at Additional Commissioner level of Bhopal Municipal Corporation were assigned to co-ordinate with nodal officers to implement guidelines.
