Government handled situation of Gandhi Sagar dam aptly: Sharma

Public Relations Minister P C Sharma and Congress Media Cell Chairperson Shobha Ojha said that ex-Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is trying to create haze over the situation related to Gandhi Sagar dam by alleging that water was not released timely from dam and Congress government erred in handling the situation. Both of them claimed that Congress government handled the situation in better manner in adverse condition.
 
They said that owing to excessive rains in catchment area during September 13-14. Before dam water could reach full reservoir level of 1312 feet, as many as 16 gates were opened. These gates were opened at 1310.2 feet of water. When information of heavy rains in catchment area reached, three more gates were opened. Chief Minister Kamal Nath kept close eye on the situation and gave necessary instructions from time to time. The officials of Water Resources Department handled situation by remaining at control room situated over dam. Had officials have not opened gates timely then any untoward situation could have taken place. “Today, squad of Central Water Commission reached Gandhi Sagar dam and took stock of situation occurred few days back.
 
This squad praised the water resources department for handling the adverse situation in better manner and this factor exposes Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s propaganda over the issue,” they said. They added that out of 52 districts, 36 districts have been affected by excess rains. Crops standing in 24 lakh hectare got damaged and 22 lakh farmers have been affected. The prima facie estimation for loss to crops stands at 9600 crores. Roads worth Rs 1566 crores have been also damaged by rains. Likewise, 54,700 houses have been also damaged. Congress government is handling the adverse situation arisen due to floods and 50,000 people have been so far evacuated. They said BJP leaders should stop politics over situation emerged due to floods and instead should get package of Rs 11,861 crore from centre.
