A little prod from Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court pushed the civic machinery in action with Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar promptly writing to all agencies to take up work of filling up potholes on top priority. Bangar has written to Project Director, National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), Chairperson, Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), General Manager, Maha Metro, and Chief Engineer, Public Works Department (PWD), that they need to ensure that roads need to be smoothened.

For NHAI, Bangar specifically underlined stretches on Pardi and Sadar where fly over construction is under way by them and gave reference of letter from Assistant Commissioner, Zone-VIII about poor condition of roads. Already the roads were in bad shape and high intensity rains during the season worsened the situation on ground. In the letter, Commissioner also mentioned that they need to address the issue of pot holes that has formed on national highway stretches passing through city. On Bhandara Road in Pardi area one can hardly find any semblance of roads due to ongoing construction of fly-over. The contract for fly over also had component relating to construction of concrete road but as primary work has slowed down there is no sign about the repairs to road surfaces yet. Same is the situation on Sadar and Katol Road where the fly-over construction is going on since last few years. The movement of heavy vehicles particularly those carrying pre-stressed concrete structures and concrete mixers to site put extra load on the tar roads that has caved in at various places.

The corresponding repairs to make this roads vehicle worthy was neglected by contractors leaving people to suffer untold miseries on daily basis. It may be mentioned that on Tuesday, taking cognisance of newspaper articles and photos mentioned difficult time for road users, Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court rapped civic body for its failure to provide pot hole free roads in city. Thus, current correspondence by Municipal Commissioner to all the Government agencies working in various parts of city assumes significance.

The letters are dated September 17, 2019, means they were drafted post receipt of communication from office of Government Pleader to NMC, in the evening. In separate letters to each of the agencies, Municipal Commissioner underlined the congisance taken by HC about potholes in city and said former should take quick steps so that information about action taken can be submitted to the court. To GM, Maha Metro, the road stretches on Kamptee, Wardha, Central Avenue, North Ambazari to Hingna it was mentioned that due to bad conditions of roads the citizens are facing difficulties while driving on them. Also Commissioner underlined that bad condition of roads can also lead to mishaps and hence they need to be repaired promptly. He also asked for action plan about repairs the potholes and damaged roads on their project route so that the information can be furnished to HC during next hearing. Municipal Commissioner also underlined a fact that from time to time civic body had intimated the agencies to fill up the pot holes on the roads stretches where their development work is going on.
