Two gates of Bhadbhada Dam opened

HEAVY rains lashed the region on August 31 at Sehore that resulted in rise in water level of Upper Lake. As a result of this, two sluice gates of Bhadbhada were opened. Chief Engineer of Water Works A R Pawar told ‘The Hitavada’ that two sluice gates of Bhadbhada were opened at 9 am to 6. 30 pm. Bhadbhada Dam has 11 sluice gates at south east corner of Upper Lake in Bhopal. The gates are used to control outflow of water from the lake to Kaliyasot river and is opened when Upper Lake reaches FTL mark of 1666.80 ft. As excess rainfall was witnessed this year, Bhadbhada gates were opened eight times. In total more than approximate 1500 million cubic feet water has been released so far. Subsequent to which heavy to very heavy rainfall at Sehore district resulted in rise in water level in Kolans river later. Water level of Kaliyasot dam is also being monitore.
 
Senior officials of Bhopal Municipal Corporation and MPWRD are in constant touch and water level in reservoirs is being monitored. Bhopal Municipal Corporation team also deployed barricades and asked people to refrain from wandering at prohibited zones near the water bodies. As rains were consistent especially in intervene hours of August 31 and September 1 Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials opened the gates at around 10 am as soon as full tank level (FTL) of Upper Lake reached its capacity of 1666.80 ft. Preparations were started to open the gates as soon as water level in Upper Lake crossed FTL mark. People were alerted by sirens at around 8 am.
 
On regular basis BMC officials are monitoring water level of reservoirs and all preparations is under process to tackle any kind of emergency. With Weather Department warning of continuous rains in Sehore and other adjacent parts of Bhopal chances of water level rising in water bodies is likely and that is the reason 24x7 monitoring of situation is being done. As it was weekend good number of visitors were seen enjoying the scenic beauty of Bhadbhada region.
