Unable to bear the cost of medical treatment of her ailing month-old daughter, a woman allegedly strangled her to death with the help her mother-in-law. The heart rending incident was reported from Ranala village under the jurisdiction of New Kamptee Police Station, on Thursday. Cops came into picture when a missing complaint about the girl was lodged.

The sequence narrated by family of Anil Kanoje seemed doubtful and hence cops put Payal, the mother of the girl child, under sustained questioning. She broke down and confessed to killing the child and took the cops to a place, a cow shed where the girl was buried after she was smothered. The girl, police said, was born on Janmastami to Payal and Anil Kanoje, residents of village Aroli village in Mauda tehsil. However, due to some medical problem, she was admitted to a private nursing home at Kamptee. But the cost of treatment, about Rs 1,000 was beyond means of the labourer couple and hence they murder the girl. For the couple, the daily up down trip from Aroli to Kamptee was beyond their meager means.

While returning to village the couple and their child along with mother-in-law decided to spent a night at residence of Karan Barwekar in Ranala village. It is suspected that during the same night, the girl was strangulated to death as the couple were finding it difficult to arrange funds for her treatment. They tried to put up that the girl had gone missing but the cops managed to crack the case. The girl’s body was exhumed from a pit in the cow shed amidst blame-game between both the accused women. Police have detained the duo and registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC and started probe.
