CODE OF ETHICS
   Date :28-Sep-2019

THE Election Commission of India (ECI) has done well to make social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp to follow the code of ethics during elections in the country. During the Lok Sabha elections such ‘code of ethics’ was promulgated by the ECI due to which these social media platforms had to take action in over 900 cases. Now that State Assembly elections are scheduled in Maharashtra and Harayana next month it was necessary for the ECI to alert these social media platforms to follow ethical norms in airing election related advertisements, relevant material and even authenticity of news reports. Ever since the advent of internet and social media platforms, political parties have been taking increasing resort to social media to spread out their messages related to elections. Such use of social media, besides being used for spreading misinformation could also violate the expenditure limits that the Election Commission has set for candidates and parties. All this must stand scrutiny of the EC.
