According to information, Mathur was travelling alone when he found surrounded by flood water. He informed senior officials of Rural police about the incident who immediately directed in-charge of Umred police station - PI Sudhakar Ambhore - to take steps to rescue him. As it was difficult to reach Mathur by crossing the flooded nullah, PI Ambhore dialled SDRF for help. In first instance the SDRF team tried to take route from Kuhi tehsil as it was shortest distance to the place where the ex-DGP was awaiting for help. But all the bridges on the interior road were closed for vehicular traffic owing to overflowing nullahs and small rivulets.

The SDRF team retraced its steps and came to Umred in the night and undertook rescue operation. Superintendent of Police (SP) Rakesh Ola also rushed the spot to supervise the rescue operation. He was rescued at around 10 pm. Mathur was carrying ample amount of medicines and water with him during the journey, informed sources.
While talking to ‘The Hitavada’ on telephone, Mathur said, he had gone to Gothangaon in Umred tehsil during his journey to Tadoba. The roads got blocked after water started flowing over the bridges following heavy rains in morning hours.
