Bursting of crackers and fireworks lit up the sky as the Twin City welcomed the New Year 2020 amid dance, fun, food and musical gala. Braving the winter chill and cold breeze, city residents on Tuesday evening gathered at party locations in large numbers to bid adieu to 2019 and welcome the New Year. City youngsters, children and senior citizens as well welcomed the New Year in a spirited way amidst bursting of crackers, relishing of cakes, gyrating and singing to the playful tunes of Hindi, Punjabi and other Bollywood and Tollywood numbers at the various New Year eve parties, organised at several hotels, clubs and also in residential colonies. Several noted restaurants, hotels, and bakeries in city were open till midnight and the occasion of New Year bring them an opportunity to do brick business. Colourful lights lit up several temples and churches in the city. Rangolis decorated the front yard of houses.
 
At the bell of midnight rang, peoples were wishing each other near Civic Centre, TI Mall, Nehru Nagar Park and other prominent places, groups of youngsters stopped on the roadsides for taking selfies, greeting friends and partying continued in hotels and clubs. Prayers were held in churches at night and temples were gearing up to open early in the morning. Though, the city witnessed chilly weather and cold wave throughout the day, but it failed to restrict people by welcoming New Year with gusto and they actively participated in various program organised during New Year celebration.
 
However, the less adventurous and crowd-haters preferred the comfortable hinterland of their houses and enjoyed the eve with their family members in front of televisions. Many temporary stalls displaying a wide range of cakes and soft drinks were spruced in every nook and corner of the city. Bars and restaurants had a hectic hour as boozerss enjoyed the eve over large pegs of their favorite beverages. On the other hand, erring commuters and underage riders, those involved in rash driving or drunken driving case were stopped and faced penalty by traffic cops. Police made elaborate arrangements to prevent any untoward incident and kept a special vigil at the liquor shops.
