RESEARCHERS from a Denmark university have come up with a disconcerting finding that the greater the amount of exposure to pollution of growing children the greater the risk of their developing Schizophrenia. This disorder could prove to be life-debilitating in young age, affecting a person’s thinking ability, behaviour and even feelings. Thus one more danger to man’s health and quality of life has been added to many more caused by air pollution. And there seems to be no end to the amount of health risks pollution is going to cause to human societies. Environmental degradation is already upon us because of high levels of pollution. Australia is battling unprecedented bushfires for the last more than one month and consequently high degree of warming of atmosphere so much so that snow on the mountains of neighbouring New Zealand is rapidly melting causing problems there as well. Unless human society takes the threats from pollution seriously and takes mitigating efforts there appears to be no escape from the disastrous consequences.

NURTURING TALENT

INDIA’S latent talent that is making waves in world cricket and the ecosystem in place to nurture young players is becoming a new template for other nations to follow. The emergence of India’s pace stock in the last couple of years has woken up the English and Australian boards as they wholeheartedly accepted the Indian model of tapping raw talent at grassroots and putting it through a well-designed system to channelise a solid bench strength. Sri Lankan coach Mickey Arthur is the latest to be floored by India’s ability to nurture young players and empower them with responsibilities at critical junctures. Lanka has seen India’s growth from close quarters as it has engaged with the Men in Blue the most in last decade or so. India’s proficiency in churning out a new crop of players regularly has left the Islanders in awe which is visible in Arthur’s acknowledgement. It all boils down to the system of age-group tournaments and exposure through emerging teams which has laid foundation for India’s rise as a top power worth its salt in international cricket.
