Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is planning to lift ban on women working in night shifts in factories. This, he says, would empower women. Section 66(1)(b) of the factories Act, 1948, puts ban on women working in factories during night shift. Pinarayi Vijayan is a senior leader of the CPI(M)and this is a progressive approach on the part of the leftist leader at a time when the Kerala High Court had ordered in 2015 that women employees cannot be asked to do night shifts extending beyond 10 pm. Karnataka Government had issued a notification allowing women to work in night shifts. When a lot is being talked about empowering women, they being not allowed to work beyond 10pm is unfair. Now political leadership and governments have started thinking over these issues. This will help bring change for the better. Women have proved that they are competent, hardworking and inferior to none in any way.
