Since the results of Zilla Parishad (ZP) and Panchayat Samiti (PS) elections, the topic of discussion in political circles is who will be President and Vice-President of ZP and Chairperson and deputy of PS. The administration has declared the dates for electing ZP and PS chiefs and deputies. As per the schedule released by the district administration, ZP President and Vice-President will be elected on January 18 (Saturday) and PS Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson will be elected on January 17 (Friday). As per the programme for ZP, the nomination forms for the two posts will be distributed and accepted between 11 am and 1 pm on January 18.

At 3 pm, the special general body meeting of ZP will commence. During the meeting, the nomination forms received will be scrutinised till 3.15 pm. Fifteen minutes will be given for withdrawal of nomination form, if any. If required, the election process will be conducted to elect President and Vice-President at 3.45 pm. The post of ZP President is reserved for Scheduled Caste (Woman).

As per the prevailing reservations on the basis of which the election process was conducted, five circles in the district were reserved for SC (Woman). These included Belona in Narkhed tehsil, Tekadi in Parseoni tehsil, Sonegaon Nipani and Besa in Nagpur (Rural) tehsil, and Nand in Bhiwapur tehsil. In four of these five circles, Congress candidates have emerged victorious. In one circle, Congress’ ally Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate has won. Congress has won Tekadi, Sonegaon Nipani, Besa, and Nand circles while NCP has bagged Belona circle.

The successful candidates in these circles reserved for SC (Woman) include: Belona -- Diksha Multaikar, Tekadi -- Rashmi Barve, Sonegaon Nipani -- Bharti Patil, Besa -- Megha Mankar, and Nand -- Nemavali Mate. With the tally of 30, Congress has got a single-handed majority in the 58-member ZP house. It ally NCP has won 10 seats. Further, Shetkari Kamgar Paksha candidate and an Independent have extended support to Congress-NCP. In such a strong position, it is almost final that ZP President will be from Congress party. It remains to be seen who among the four namely Diksha Multaikar, Rashmi Barve, Bharti Patil, Megha Mankar becomes ZP chief. With Congress in a comfortable position to get President’s post, it is likely to give the post of Vice-President for alliance partner NCP. Salil Deshmukh, son of Home Minister and senior NCP leader Anil Deshmukh; Dinesh Bang, son of senior NCP leader and former minister Rameshchandra Bang, have been elected to ZP for the first time. Whether any of them gets the chance.

PS chiefs, deputies to be elected on 17th Chairpersons and Deputy Chairpersons of Panchayat Samitis (PS) will be elected on January 17. The elections will be conducted at respective PS office. An officer of the rank of Deputy Collector will conduct the election process in each PS.
