AFTER drawing blank in the probe into the mysterious firing on Mayor Sandip Joshi for almost a month, City Police have roped in a surveillance expert from Mumbai to crack the case. The expert has already reached Nagpur and is working on the analysis of dump data, Call Details Record (CDR) and Internet Protocol Detail Record (IPDR). The city police also have their own expert for analysis but they did not succeed in extracting pin-point information so far. The surveillance expert is focusing on the phone numbers that were active and connected to mobile towers near Wardha Road on the day of incident.

As per Mayor Joshi’s statement, bullets were fired at 11.59 pm on December 17 last. The expert is scanning data of towers from 6 pm to around 2 am with focus on data available between 11 pm and 1 am. “As thousands of vehicles were passing through Wardha Road during the time, it was difficult for police expert to pin-point the suspicious numbers from innumerable data,” claimed sources.

“Now, cell phone technology can tell which direction a person was moving with phone between the two towers. The expert is using high-end software and tool for analysis of telecommunication data,” sources added. Soon after finding suspicious phone numbers, the expert will zero in on these numbers and conduct thorough checking of their prior records including phone calls and IPDR. The IPDR helps the police for analysis of data traffic statistics produced on a network on a particular mobile number. It would also help the expert to understand whether WhatsApp calls were made through the phone number to hide CDR and browsing history.

The cops are expecting a breakthrough in the case within a week as the expert had helped Mumbai Police in many complex crimes, claimed sources. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Crime, Gajanan Rajmane, is conducting investigation in the case and interrogated many persons so far. However, the investigators are still struggling for a clue. In a recently held press conference, Police Commissioner Dr. Bhushan Kumar Upadhyay had commented that the case was a challenge for Nagpur Police and he had vowed to solve the case. Mayor Joshi had a narrow escape when two bike-borne men fired at his car on Wardha Road on December 17.

The incident took place at around 11.59 pm when Joshi was returning home along with his family members and friends after celebrating his wedding anniversary at a restaurant. Joshi’s SUV was the last in the cavalcade and when it reached a junction of the Outer Ring Road and Wardha Road, two motorcycle-borne men, who were behind the car, fired three bullets at the Mayor’s vehicle and fled. One bullet hit the driver’s window of the SUV, another pierced through the passenger window behind the driver’s seat and the third hit the rear windshield of the car.
