ONE of the eminent leaders of the country, the RSS chief Mr. Mohan Bhagwat has very rightly advocated having a policy on population. He has preferred a two-child norm and possibly a legal position in that regard. His word carries much importance and the political community needs to take cognisance of such wise counsel. After many years an important personage has spoken on the issue of population control which suddenly had been pushed to the back-burner though it carries much significance for socio-economic well-being of the country. The population control policy was badly handled in the 70s of the last century which created avoidable resistance among the masses. This is a learning lesson for policy makers. India is supposed to have a demographic dividend. But at some point of time it could also prove to be problematic as the question of sharing limited resources among too many claimants will become increasingly difficult. That could trigger socio-economic discord in the society and could become cause of disquiet and imbalance.

SHOT IN THE ARM

A COMEBACK from a hiding, that too against a side full of top-class performers, serves as a massive shot in the arm for future of a team. The manner in which India roared back to tame the full-strength Australia in the three-match One-Day series tells how a mentally resolute bunch of cricketers can turn tide in their favour. The first-game shellacking was quickly swept aside as the Indian team displayed a wonderful desire to defend their supremacy on the home turf. Mind you, this was an Australian team using their optimum talent in all departments. Steven Smith and David Warner showed their class as did Mitchell Starc and Adam Zampa yet India thumped them riding on their tenacity. This trait will serve India handsomely on their New Zealand tour. Windy and chilling conditions test many champions in the Kiwiland but the high of beating Australia with a domineering show will definitely help Kohli and Co to overcome those challenges. India have done it in the past and there is no reason why they can’t repeat it.
