A meeting was held on Saturday with B N Satpathy, Senior Consultant to Principal Scientific Officer, Cabinet Secretariat, Government of India at Bhilai Niwas Board Room on ‘R&D Eco System, Resource Efficiency and Identification of Areas for Research by Academia in Iron & Steel Sector’. The meeting was attended by senior officers from BSP and led by Anirban Dasgupta, Chief Executive Officer of Bhilai Steel Plant; Anita Sawant, Regional Officer, Chhattisgarh Environment Control Board; Dr A M Rawani, Director, NIT-Raipur and his team and Prof R K Ghosh and his team from IIT-Bhilai.
 
The discussions centered on enhancing industry-academia collaboration including joint Research and Development by BSP, NIT-Raipur and IIT-Bhilai. BSP has already entered into a MoU with IIT-Bhilai in December 2019 for enhancing the collaboration. IIT-Bhilai has been working on technical problems related with plates, continuous casting and rail rolling. CEO Dasgupta stressed upon taking up newer areas for problem solving through data analytics particularly in URM and BRM so as to detect surface defects and other problems to reduce rejection of prime rails.
 
He also stressed upon identification through research of future technologies and the need to go back to fundamental research to find alternatives to coal beneficiation, gasification of coal, reducing carbon dioxide emissions, hydrogen-based steel-making, etc. Senior Consultant, BN Satpathy emphasised the vision of Government of India in promoting R&D in association large industries like BSP and academic institutions. He also advised SAIL to revisit its HR policy and incorporate sustainability in its vision statement so that this aspect is visible in its future strategies and actions.
 
Dr A M Rawani, Director, NIT-Raipur and his team informed the participants of its facilities, collaborations with industries and academic institutions as well the various research projects they are involved in. He informed that a MoU with BSP is under finalization and likely to be signed this month. Prof R K Ghosh and his team informed the house of the projects they have undertaken in BSP and areas for future collaboration in academics and technology.
