After a gap of 20 years, Durg Municipal Corporation (DMC) has got a Congress Mayor. In the election held on Monday, Congress candidate Dheeraj Bakliwal defeated Narendra Banjare of BJP to get elected as the Mayor. The Congress that claimed to have the support of 31 Corporators got a total of 40 votes while BJP candidate got 20 votes. Surprisingly the Congress got the votes of nine rebels and Independents. After being elected as Mayor, Dheeraj Bakaliwal was greeted by Home Minister, Tamradhwaj Sahu, MLA, Arun Vora and other senior leaders who were present there.
 
In the election held for the post of Speaker Rajesh Yadav of Congress scraped through when he managed to win the election by defeating Independent candidate Meena Singh by a margin of only 2 votes. Rajesh Yadav got 31 votes while Meena Singh got 29 votes out of the total 60. While the four nominations received for Appeal Committee members comprising of Naresh Tejwani, Kavita Tandi, Amit Baghel and Prakash Joshi were elected unopposed and there was no contenders.
 
Earlier in the morning as per the schedule the oath taking ceremony of the newly elected Corporators of Durg Municipal Corporation (DMC) commenced at Kushabhau Thakre Mangal Bhavan, Aditya Nagar Durg. After the oath taking ceremony, nominations were accepted for the post of Mayor and Speaker along with Appeal Committee members from 11.30 am to 12.30 pm. Congress candidate Dheeraj Bakliwal filed the nomination for Mayor and Narendra Banjare was made the mayoral candidate from BJP. While for Speaker post three nominations were filed. Rajesh Yadav from Congress, Ajay Verma from BJP and Independent candidate Meena Singh.
 
Also for the Appeal Committee, 4 nominations Naresh Tejwani, Kavita Tandi, Amit Baghel and Prakash Joshi were received. Collector and District Election Officer Ankit Anand fixed the time for withdrawal of nominations till 2 pm and Ajay Verma of BJP withdrew his nomination for Speaker, making the contest for Speaker direct. Immediately after the voting for the post of Mayor counting of votes began and the result was declared. This entailed the voting for Speaker and Appeal Committee members whose results were also finally declared.
