No university was attacked even during the time of Emergency and it is shameful for the world’s biggest democracy to witness such an event, said the former IAS officer Kannan Gopinathan on Monday. Gopinathan made the above statement while addressing a protest staged at the Board Office square in show of solidarity with the students of Jawaharlal Nehru University, who were attacked by a masked mob on Sunday night.

The former IAS officer also said that trending hashtags on Twitter, making memes and making Tik-Tok videos is not democracy, instead understanding the real issues and raising questions is democracy. Taking to streets when necessary and raising questions before the Government is what the democracy offers to the citizens and we will do that, he said.

He also appealed the youths to stand united against any issue they feel is unconstitutional. Educationist, Anil Sadgopal, who was also protesting, said masked goons entered the hostel premises of the JNU, they attacked the girls and beat them with sticks and also pelted stones upon them.

“It is necessary to unmask such goons,” the educationist appealed. Sadgopal also said that those speaking about Hindu-Rashtra should now fear the informed and educated youths. Quoting freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, he said, “What is the use of such education when the educated are not being heard?” Hundreds of people, including those of all age groups, flocked the Board Office square and took part in a demonstration staged a day after violence broke down in JNU. The protest, organised under no-banner, was later joined by the workers of Congress Seva Dal. A march was taken out from the square and slogans were also raised against the brutality with the JNU students. Police force was also present at the spot of protest to maintain law and order.
