Bankers to join today’s strike

THE bank officers and employees from five associations will join the National General Strike called by 11 trade unions on January 8. Bank officers and employees took out a torch march from Budhapara Bijli Chowk on Tuesday evening. All India bank Employees Association (AIBEA), All India Bank Officers Association (AIBOA), Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI), Indian National Bank Employees Federation (INBEF) and Indian National Bank Officers Congress (INBOC), the five associations out of nine under the umbrella organisation United Federation of Bank Unions (UFBU) have extended support and will join millions of workers across the country in the national strike.
 
Striking bank men will assemble here at Budhapara Bijli Chowk on January 8 at 10.30 am to demonstrate. All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC) and National Confederation of Bank Employees (NCBE), the main officers and award staff body of State Bank of India (SBI) have extended moral support to the unions joining the national general strike. Thus, the leading bank of the country is expected to function normally as on other days. General Secretary of Chhattisgarh Bank Employees Association Shirish Nalgundwar said that besides joining the national general strike, the bankmen has declared the day as ‘All India Bank Strike’ in support of charter of demands of the national convention of workers.
 
The bankmen will protest banking reforms and unwanted merger of banks, demanding stringent measures to recover defaulted loans from corporates along with expediting wage revision, adequate recruitment in banks, 5-day banking etc, he added. The repeated meetings with Chief Labour Commissioner’s office in Delhi, representatives of Indian Bank Association and Department of Financial Services under Ministry of Finance, there was no concrete outcome to reconsider the strike call. Thus, the bank officers and employees of 5 associations have decided to join the national strike on Wednesday, Nalgundwar stated.
