The Bharatiya Janata Party Central Election Committee led by BJP National President Jagat Prakash Nadda on Sunday announced the candidature of Dr Gambheer Singh for contesting the by-election being held at Marwahi Legislative Assembly on behalf of BJP. After his name was announced as BJP candidate from Marwahi, Dr Gambheer Singh, while extending his gratitude to central and state BJP leadership for the responsibility said, “now time has come when with help of the glorious traditions of Adivasis, we’ll have to build a distinct future for the Adivasi community.”
 
The BJP Central Election Committee meeting chaired by BJP National President Dr Jagat Prakash Nadda on Saturday, was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Union MoRTH Minister Nitin Gadkari as well as other Members of Central Election Committee. After considering the panels sent by different states where by-elections are being held, the Central Election Committee announced the BJP candidatures for by-elections in Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Manipur and Odisha. Accordingly, the BJP Central Election Committee after considering the panel proposal forwarded by Chhattisgarh BJP State Election Committee, finalised the name of Dr Gambheer Singh, Dean and HoD (General Surgery), Raipur Institute of Medical Sciences.
 
The State Election Committee had forwarded a panel of names comprising of Dr Gambheer Singh, Dean and HOD (General Surgery), Raipur Institute of Medical Sciences; Archana Porte, Sameera Paikra and Ramdayal Uikey with emphasis laid upon Dr Gambheer Singh. Dr Gambheer Singh, a prominent name in the field of medicine and social service, was born on June 11, 1968 in the Gond tribe in Marwahi. His father Ben Singh is also a prominent name in the field of social reformer and an accomplished leader, who had played many decisive roles in the political development of Marwahi Legislative Assembly. He had also played a very significant role in Gondwana Agitation. Marwahi Legislative Assembly is dominated mainly by Gond, Kanwar, Jaiswal, Kalar and Gupta communities and the name of Dr Gambheer Singh’s family is among the respectful and trustworthy families in the area.
 
Dr Singh completed his primary education from Latkoni (Khurd) and higher education from Pendra. Later he completed his MBBS from Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal in 1994 and PG from G R Medical College Gwalior in 1998. Earlier, while deciding upon the panel of candidates, the BJP think-tank in the state had carried out brain-storming with local leaders to measure the winning ability of the aspirants. During the 2018 elections, BJP had fielded Archana Porte while the Congress had fielded Gulab Singh Raj and both of them were pitted against Ajit Jogi who contested on Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (J) ticket, in a triangular contest. Ajit Jogi had won one-sidedly by polling 74041 votes which amounts to 50 per cent votes approximately. The BJP candidate Archana Porte had polled 27,579 votes while the Congress candidate Gulab Singh had polled 20,040 votes. However, the seat fell vacant after the demise of Ajit Jogi.
