A day after Bharatiya Janata Party announced the name of Dr Gambheer Singh, a surgeon, as its candidate, the All India Congress Committee named the candidature of Dr Krishan Kumar Dhruv, also a doctor, for contesting by-elections from Marwahi Legislative Assembly. Amidst stiff opposition from a section of Congress in Marwahi as well as by Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi Sarpanch Sangh which had stated that if the Congress fields a helicopter drop candidate, then the candidate will be opposed. In fact the Sarpanch Sangh has mulled the idea of fielding a rebel as an Independent candidate.

Dr K K Dhruv’s name was suggested by the CPCC think-tank to AICC Chhattisgarh In-charge P L Punia and a panel of candidates including Dr K K Dhruv, Pramod Paraste, Gulab Raj and Ajit Shyam Singh was short-listed giving emphasis to Dr Dhruv and was forwarded to AICC Chairman. The letter issued by AICC General Secretary Mukul Wasnik stated that AICC President Sonia Gandhi has approved the proposal for the candidature of Dr Krishan Kumar Dhruv to contest the ensuing Assembly be-elections as Congress candidate from Marwahi Legislative Assembly. Dr Krishan Kumar Dhruv has been giving his services as Block Medical Officer since last 20 years, of which, he is posted as BMO in Marwahi since last 15 years and is contesting elections now after giving resignation. Being a government doctor, he has good acquaintance with local population in Marwahi, particularly areas neighbouring Koriya district and Kotma block. He also has good social acquaintance in Gurela and Pendra area as well.

The by-election is being held at Marwahi Legislative Assembly after the demise of sitting MLA Ajit Jogi. Marwahi had been a strong hold of Jogis. In 2018, Ajit Jogi had won the election with a huge margin of 46,462 votes by defeating his nearest rival and BJP candidate Archana Porte, while the Congress candidate was in third place. Ajit Jogi became the first Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, had contested from Marwahi in 2001 by-election and was victorious from there. Later in 2003 and 2008, he was re-elected from this seat. In 2013, Amit Jogi had contested from here and was victorious. Again in 2018, Ajit Jogi after resigning from Congress and constituting Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (J) contested from here on JCC ticket and registered a huge victory. This time amidst caste certificate controversy, it still remains to be seen who will contest on behalf of Janta Congress Chhattisgarh.
