Bhanupratappur Forest Division had inaugurated a mini forest developed by using Miyawaki technique on Wednesday. The Chief guest MLA Manoj Mandawi, Bhanupratappur DFO Manish Kashyap were present at the inauguration function of mini forest in Depot Campus. Divisional Forest Officer Manish Kashyap informed that around 11,000 saplings of 20 variety of trees were planted over 1.25 acres of land. Miyawaki plantation technique are different than normal plantation.

Since the saplings are planted are close to each other, after a growth of 1 or 2 years, the trees block the sunlight from reaching the ground. It keeps the humidity intact and discourage the growth of grass. So, the trees grow very quickly. In this technique, the ground is dug up to a meter and then after mixing the soil thoroughly, husk and fertiliser are added. Then the sapling is planted and ground is covered with straws. This maintains the fertility of the soil which propels the growth.

It creates jungle like atmosphere when the straws decompose and turns into manure. Saplings planted with Miyawaki technique grow 10 times faster and absorb 30 times more carbon dioxide and stops air and sound pollution. Within 20 years, it turns into jungle. This type of plantation will be useful for urban areas, where the space for plantation is less and pollution is higher. This technique was successfully used to create mini urban forests in cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru.
