State Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Monday said that land mafias are encroaching houses and residential plots purchased by common citizens with their hard earned money. “It was observed that some officials of concerned department are also involved in such crimes,” said Deshmukh. Addressing a press conference at Police Gymkhana in Civil Lines, Home Minister Deshmukh directed senior police officials to crack a whip against the mafias. The minister held a special camp and heard grievances of citizens whose property encroached by the mafias. “A total of 50 complaints were received in the camp and eight offences have been registered so far,” Deshmukh informed.

“As land mafias are committing the crimes in connivance with government officials, they remain ‘safe’ from the long hands of law,” stated Deshmukh and added that police have been directed to take action against such officers after collecting strong evidence. “A major action will be taken to eradicate land mafias from the city,” he said and added that the illegal houses of notorious goons Sahil Syed and Santosh Ambekar were demolished. The same action will be taken against other criminals, Deshmukh further warned. When reporters pointed out that Nagpur is becoming a hub for drug trafficking and illegal arms, the Home Minister said that the police have been directed to eradicate the network of drug smugglers.

“Strict action will also be taken against those who are indulged in smuggling of fire arms from Madhya Pradesh in coordination with concerned police,” he informed. The grievance redress camp against land mafias is a ‘pilot project’ in Nagpur and this camp will also be extended in other parts of the State. Deshmukh also appreciated the Gadchiroli police for their action against Naxals in the district. Five Naxals, including four women, were killed in an encounter at Kosmi-Kisneli forest in Gadchiroli district on Sunday evening. “The Gadchiroli police have done a good work. The Maharashtra police force is doing a good job and Naxal activities have come down in the state in the last six to seven months,” Deshmukh told reporters. Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar was present in the press conference.

Decision on police transfers soon A decision on the transfers of Police Inspectors, Assistant Police Inspectors and Police Sub-Inspectors will be taken soon. “I have taken note of letters sent by police officials of Gadchiroli district and their request transfers will also be considered soon. Nagpur Police Commissionerate will get a Joint Commissioner of Police very soon, Deshmukh informed in reply to a question.

No action over threat call to HM Threat phone calls were made to Home Minister Anil Deshmukh's residence in last month. However, Nagpur police failed to nab the accused persons. When reporters asked Deshmukh about arrest of the accused, he dodged the question stating “it is an old issue now.”
