Rich tributes paid to martyred cops on Police Commemoration Day

POLICE Commemoration Day was observed at Martyrs Memorial near Police Headquarters at Takli on Monday. Officersandmenfrom differentpoliceunitspaidhomage to their colleagueswhosacrificed theirlives in line of duty. Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar and other officers placed wreaths at the memorial and offered tributes tothemartyrs.SpecialInspector General of Police (Nagpur Range) Chiranjeev Prasad, Additional Commissioners of PoliceDKZalke (SouthRegion) and Naveenchandra Reddy (North Region), Additional Commissioner (Crime) Sunil Fulari,SuperintendentofPolice (ACB) Rashmi Nandedkar, Additional SP (Nagpur Rural) Rahul Maknikar, Commandant (SRPF Group-IV) JavedAhmed, all Deputy Commissioners of Police,AssistantCommissioners of Police, seniorInspectors and citizenspaidhomagetothemartyrs.
 
Cops from Nagpur City Police force, Nagpur (Rural) Police, Government Railway Police (GRP) and SRPF participated in the commemoration parade, which was led by Reserved Sub-Inspector Bharatsingh Thakur. DCPs Gajanan Rajmane (Headquarters) andVikramSali (Traffic) read out the names of 264policepersonnel, including one officer and four men from Maharashtra, who laid down theirlives inthe lineofduty this year. After a gun salute was given, policemen reversed their weaponswiththeirheadsdown andofferedtributes totheircolleagues who sacrificed their lives.
 
On October 21, 1959, Chinese troops opened fire and threwgrenadesattwentypolicemen in an ambush in Hot Springs area near Ladakh. Ten of the brave police personnel attained martyrdom and seven others sustained injuries in the incident.
 
More than a month later, on November 28,1959,the Chinesetroopshandedoverthe dead bodies of the martyred policemen to India. To pay respects to them, Police Commemoration Day is observed on October 21. Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar said, “We pay tributes to all police personnel martyredwhiledischargingtheir duties andtheir sacrificewillbe always remembered.” The proceedings of the function were conducted by senior Inspector Ashok Bagul.
