SEVEN months after coronovirus induced lockdown, sporting activities seems to be returning back on the track, though not in full flow. Sportspersons have started fitness training and stamina building to bring themselves back in shape and keep them competition ready. Though there is no green signal to actual competition with State government permitting outdoor activities with restricted numbers, sportspersons are making use of whatever opportunity they are getting.

Handball players of the city are using this time of ‘Mission Begin Again’ in developing their stamina and making themselves fit. Dr Sunil Bhotmange, Shiv Chhatrapati Award winner and Secretary of Nagpur District Handball Association, has started training his players. The players are regularly performing road running and stamina building exercises at Dhantoli Park under the watchful eyes of Bhotmange. Keeping in mind coronavirus, the players have decided not to practice with handball. Instead they are following the exercises instructed by Dr Bhotmange.

“We are doing fitness training and running since last 20 days. The players were out of touch due to the lockdown imposed to break the chain of coronavirus. But with ‘Mission Begin Again’ and ease in lockdown, we have decided to start from the scratch,” Dr Bhotmange told ‘The Hitavada’. “Handball training in most of the parts of the country has started. I talked with Delhi coaches and they said they have started the practice on their respective grounds. “But in Nagpur all handball grounds are closed. RTM Nagpur University ground, Divisional Sports Complex and Yashwant Stadium all are closed. We used to practice at these venues,” said Dr Bhotmange. Dr Bhotmange, who is a former national level player said. players are doing road running in the morning session. “We started with 10 minutes running and now have increased it to 30 minutes. “I am concentrating on stamina building, flexibility and agility of body.

Players are being asked to do breathing exercise as it is very important during this pandemic,” he said. The players are concentrating on basics of the game and are not rushing to match practice. “At present I am concentrating on basics and not using the handball. The players are doing shadow practise and dodging. We will start actual match practice in next few days.” “From about 17 to 20 players who practise daily, there is one international player in Poonam Kadav, as many as ten national players including players from other states as well. “Poonam and Samiksha Itankar are the two Shiv Chhatrapati Award winners,” added Dr Bhotmange who is Assistant Professor with Taywade College in Koradi.
