Webinar on ‘Physical Activity and Health post COVID-19’ held

VASANTRAO Naik Government Institute of Arts and Social Sciences (VNGIASS) recently organised a webinar on ‘Physical Activity and Health’. The webinar was in continuation of the sports series lectures organised by the Department of Physical Education and Sports. Dr Roma Sarnaik, a certified specialist in the branch of Lifestyle Medicine concerned with Healthy Lifestyle Behaviour Changes and Sustainable Lifestyle, was the resource person.
 
Dr Roma Sarnaik, who is a doctor and was herself a sportsperson since childhood and represented her school in swimming in nationals, spoke about the physical activity levels in children and adults, and prevalence of chronic or lifestyle diseases (non-communicable diseases). She spoke about various lifestyle diseases and made the students aware about lifestyle medicine, this being a relatively new branch practised in India.
 
Dr Roma, who also has a Master’s degree in Nutrition in Practice and in Physical Activity and Health from England, talked about the effects of physical activity on physical as well as mental health of students. She also stressed on childhood obesity and how children have increased chances of being obese in adulthood as well, along with the negative health effects. During her online lecture, she also enlightened the students on the effects of physical activity on academic performance as well. She asked students to have proper nutrition and sound sleep for a healthy life. Dr Roma guided the students on how to stay active, maintain proper nutrition and emotional resilience during these COVID-19 times.
 
She concluded the webinar with some tips to students highlighting the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The webinar was conducted in presence of Dr Sunitra Maharaj Patil, Principal, VNGIASS; Dr Deepak Sontakkey, HoD, Department of Physical Education and Sports; Dr Chhaya Patil, Director, Physical Education Department and Dr Indrajit Basu of SK Porwal College, Kamptee.
