The Wholesale Grains and Seeds Merchants Association recently urged the Government to bring down Mandi Cess to 0.35 per cent to control raising prices of the commodities.
 
The association also said that the prevailing level of Mandi Cess in Maharashtra which is 1 per cent of the trade value, is also affecting the farmers. In a press release issued here, Secretary of the Wholesale Grains and Seeds Merchants Association Pratap Motwani said that Mandi Cess is one of the major reasons for pushing up the prices. He also highlighted that neibouring states like Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka have recently lowered the levels of mandi cess in their Agricul ture Produce Marketing Committees (APMCs). Madhya Pradesh Government had recently reduced the Mandi Cess from 1.7 per cent to 0.5 per cent following the agitation of the local farmers.
 
The farmers in Madhya Pradesh had called off their 12-day strike that had paralysed mandis across the state.Similarly, the Karnataka Government had also reduced the mandi cess to 0.35 percent. Motwani said that the Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA Government in Maharashtra should also reduce Mandi Cess accordingly.In addition to this, Motwani also demanded the Government to strengthen security in the Nagpur APMC saying that incidents of thefts are rising in the APMC markets.
