FORMER Joint Director, Sports and Youth Services, Government of Maharashtra Dr Jaiprakash Duble stressed on need of awareness programmes for dope free sports in India. Dr Duble was speaking during a webinar jointly organised by Directorate of Sports and Youth Services, District Sports Office, Akola and JD Sports Foundation on the subject of ‘Doping Control in Sports’. Speaking up his mind, Dr Duble, who is also President of JD Sports Foundation, said, “State and Central Governments encourage sportsmen and their coaches through various schemes to win medals at international events.

But it is observed that sportspersons use unfair means in order to secure podium finishes.” In order to prevent the malpractice, sportspersons as well as the coaches need to be made more aware so that are alert, feels Duble. “We need to organise awareness programme on large scale in our country for dope free sports inculcating a habit of winning with true and fair play,” emphasised Duble. World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) regularly declares list of prohibited substances.

In India, the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) is working to get rid of the doping menace. Om Prakash Bakoriya (IAS), Commissioner of Sports and Youth Services, Govt of Maharashtra also expressed his views saying that players should not follow illegal ways for winning. He said coaches and parents should also be aware of the effects of doping. NADA’s Dr Ankush Gupta gave detailed information on harmful side-effects of prohibited substances in sports.
