Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan passes away

UNION Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Ram Vilas Paswan, who was admitted to a private hospital here for the last several days, passed away on Thursday evening, his family members said. He was 74. The news of his demise was announced by his son Chirag Paswan, who tweeted: “Father, now you are no more in this world but wherever you are, you will be with me. Miss you papa...” He also shared an old photo of him and his father along with the tweet.
According to his close family members, Paswan breathed his last on Thursday evening at around 8.20 pm at the Fortis Hospital here where he was admitted for several days. He had undergone a heart surgery at a hospital here a few days ago. Paswan was a Minister in the Narendra Modi Government, the UPA Government as well as the Atal Behari Vajpayee-led NDA Government at the Centre. His death came just days after his son and LJP chief Chirag Paswan decided to go solo in the Bihar Assembly polls.
He had been in active politics for more than five decades. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday condoled the passing away of Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, saying there is a void in the nation that will perhaps never be filled. PM said, “I am saddened beyond words. Shri Ram Vilas Paswan Ji’s demise is a personal loss. I have lost a friend, valued colleague and someone who was extremely passionate to ensure every poor person leads a life of dignity. President Ram Nath Kovind said the nation has lost a visionary leader in the demise of Paswan.
Paswan was the voice of the oppressed, and championed the cause of the marginalised, Kovind said. “A firebrand socialist in youth, mentored by the likes of Jayaprakash Narayan during anti-Emergency movement, Paswan ji had enviable rapport with masses and he ardently strove for their welfare. Condolences to his family, supporters,” Kovind said.
