RAIPUR,

Fate of all eight candidates including Dr Gambheer Singh from Bharatiya Janata Party and Dr Krishan Kumar Dhruw from Indian National Congress, who’re in fray for by-election in Marwahi Legislative Assembly (ST) will be known on Tuesday. Amidst tight security, counting for the by-election in Marwahi Assembly Constituency will be held on Tuesday. Counting of votes for the by-election to Marwahi Assembly constituency (ST), which was a strong bastion of former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi, will be held on Tuesday from 8 am at the Government Gurukul Vidyalaya, Gaurela.

The by-election in Marwahi was necessitated due to the death of sitting Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J) MLA and former CM Ajit Jogi in May this year. The by-poll has become prestigious for the ruling Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party has also left no stone unturned in winning the elections. For the first time since the inception of Chhattisgarh State, no candidate from the Jogi family has contested the election in Marwahi. The Bharatiya Janata Party and Indian National Congress leaders have led the campaigning for their respective candidates in the Jogi’s bastion where during the last leg of campaigning Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (J) extended its support to the BJP candidate, making the contest open and interesting.

It is worth mentioning here that no one from the Jogi family could contest the by-poll as the Election Commission had rejected the nomination papers of JCC (J) President Amit Jogi and his wife Richa Jogi after their respective Social Status (Caste) Certificates were cancelled. Although eight candidates are in the fray for the by-poll in Marwahi which comes under the newly- formed Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi district, the ruling Congress and main opposition BJP are locked in a direct fight,. While the BJP has fielded Dr Gambheer Singh, Professor and HoD (General Surgery) Raipur Institute of Medical Sciences, the INC has fielded Dr Krishan Kumar Dhruw, who had a long stint as the Block Medical Officer (BMO) in Marwahi area.

The other candidates in the fray are Ritu Pandram of Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP), Dr Urmila Singh Marko of Rashriya Gondwana Party, Pushpa Khelan Korche of Ambedkarite Party of India, Beersingh Nagesh of Bharatiya Tribal Party, Lakshman Porte of Bharatiya Sarvajan Hitay Samaj Party and an independent- Sonmati Salam. The seat, reserved for Scheduled Tribes candidates, recorded 77.89 per cent turnout during polling on November 3. On Tuesday, the postal ballots will be taken up for counting at first followed by votes cast in the EVMs. After the completion of counting of votes polled in the electronic voting machines, matching of VVPAT slips with EVMs at any five polling booths will be carried out, he said. The VVPAT provides feedback on paper to the electorate about whom they have voted using the ballot-less voting system. During the 2018 Assembly poll in Marwahi, Ajit Jogi had polled 74,041 votes as JCC (J) candidate and had defeated his nearest rival Archana Porte of the BJP by a margin of 46,462 votes, while the Congress stood third. In the 90-member state Assembly, the Congress has 69 seats, BJP-14, JCC (J)-four and BSP-two seats.
