All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Sonia Gandhi has confirmed the name of Adv Abhijit Wanjari for the Graduates’ Constituency. Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) had already declared the name of Adv Wanjari in March this year itself. But the confirmation is being made by Sonia Gandhi herself indicates, Congress’ intention to fight with full force. Mahavikas Aaghadi (MVA) has yet not cleared its stand but according to senior leaders of all the three parties Adv Wanjari would be supported by MVA. It means now the fight will be between Adv Wanjari and Sandip Joshi of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Unlike his opponent from BJP, Adv Wanjari has not enjoyed power in civic politics much. But he had contested one Assembly election on Congress ticket once from East Nagpur. He was denied ticket from South Nagpur whereform his late father Govindrao Wanjari won. From East Nagpur he was defeated and stood at fourth number. Like Joshi, Adv Wanjari too has legacy of his father due to which he could establish contacts with several top leaders in the party. At some point of time though Wanjaris were sidelined, Adv Abhijit maintained loyalty with the party.

He kept abiding the rules of Congress. Gradually he entered into university politics where he won the Senate elections thrice and worked on several bodies. During his tenure in university politics he kept growing and established his leadership. His long stay in university politics may benefit him in Graduates’ constituency elections. Adv Wanjari has earned name as educationist. Having worked at different positions in Congress, Adv Wanjari did not leave any stone unturned as far as growth of group of educational institutions formed by his late father is concerned.

With the announcement of his name long ago, Adv Wanjari has made two rounds of campaigning in the constituency that include 32 assembly segments, 6 Lok Sabha constituencies and around 1.84 lakh voters. With his experience of university politics through which he established connect to the people from outside Nagpur too will he pose a threat for BJP remains to be seen.
