Congress candidate Dr K K Dhruw polled 83,561 votes, while BJP candidate Dr Gambheer Singh polled 45,364 votes
 
 
Congress candidate Dr K K Dhruw defeated BJP candidate Dr Gambheer Singh by 38,197 votes in Marwahi by-poll and with this win the Congress party now has 70 seats out of 90 in the Chhattisgarh Assembly. Congress candidate Dr K K Dhruw polled 83,561 votes, while BJP candidate Dr Gambheer Singh polled 45,364 votes in a direct fight between the two candidates.
 
Dr Dhruw maintained a steady lead from the beginning, but for one round, where the BJP candidate scored over the Congress candidate. Congress candidate Dr Dhruw secured 56.09% votes, while BJP candidate Dr Singh got 30.45% votes. In the counting of the postal ballots, Dr Gambheer Singh got 171 postal votes, while Dr K K Dhruw received 478. There were in all eight candidates in the fray and Gondvana Gantantra Party candidate Ritu Pandram polled 7,864 votes. Rashtriya Gondvana Party candidate Dr Urmila Singh Marko polled 2,420 votes. Bhartiya Tribal Party candidate Bir Singh Nagesh polled 2,153 votes. Independent candidate Sonmati Salam polled 2,114 votes.
 
Bhartiya Sarvjan Hitay Samaj Party candidate Lakshman Porte and Ambedkarite Party of India candidate Pushpa Khelan Korche polled 858 and 845 votes respectively. The total number of electors were 1,91,004 votes. The total number of valid polled votes were 1,49,489. The NOTA polled 3,787 votes. 381 votes were rejected. Total number of tendered votes was 5. Counting of votes began at the Government Gurukul Vidyalaya, Gaurela at 8 am. The counting was held at 14 tables at the counting centre. Marwahi by-poll had recorded 77.89 per cent turnout during polling on November 3.
 
The counting of postal ballots was held first followed by the counting of votes in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). After the completion of counting of votes polled in the electronic voting machines, matching of VVPAT slips with EVMs was carried out. In the assembly election-2018, former Chief Minister and Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (Jogi) Ajit Jogi had defeated BJP candidate Archana Porte by a margin of 49,462 votes from from Marwahi seat. Earlier, Congress party had won Dantewada and Chitrakote by-polls.
