BUOYED by the resounding success of the ‘special edition’ of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced it readiness to host the 2021 edition of the ICC T20 World Cup next October-November. The confidence stems from the wonderful arrangements put in place for the franchisee tournament amid the dangers of COVID-19 pandemic.

That the IPL went off without any big incident is a tribute to the minute planning and its exact execution by the BCCI management. The same can now be replicated in the WT20, however, all depends on the health situation in the future in wake of the prediction of a second wave of coronavirus. The danger is yet not over and the BCCI will have to take forward the IPL experience to innovate and adapt itself in case of further challenging conditions. Playing host to IPL teams and national teams are two different matters. Though the protocols would not differ much, the challenge again will be in managing the logistics and travel plans. It is too early to talk about the future but a Plan B in place is always a welcome step.
