India is a unique country with diversity. The lunar calendars are generally followed in India. The diversity is also seen in the following of calendars as per many states. The new year according to the states start with their respective almanacs. Though, most lunar calendars start the year on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada and is being celebrated as Gudhi Padwa or Yugadi, Vikram Samvat or the new year as per the calendar prepared by Vikramaditya and is followed in many states especially in Gujarat, starts on Kartik Shukla Pratipada.
 
This first day of Kartik month is the fourth day of Diwali festival and is popular as Bali Pratipada in Maharashtra. It is also known as Padwa when the daughters performs ‘Aukshan’ to their fathers. In other states, this day is celebrated as Govardhan Pooja or Annakut pooja. Most of the times, the new year of Vikram Samvat starts on Annakut or Govderhan Pooja.
 
This year, Pratipada Tithi begins on November 15 and will end on November 16 at 7.06 am. Some religious communities performed Goverdhan Pooja on the same day, while according to traditional almanac of Vikram Samvat, the new year 2077 will begins on November 16. The Tithi of Laxmi Pujan that is Amavasya was ended on November 15 at 10.36 am and Pratipada Tithi began at the same time. As per the tradition, the day seen by the new moon is considered as the first day.
 
Therefore, the beginning of New Year ‘Vikram Samvat 2077’ is on November 16. The first day of Vikram Samvat is the time to close old account books and to open new account books. In Gujarat, traditional account books are known as Chopda. Yama Dwitiya is observed on Dwitiya Tithi during Kartik month. Most of the times, Yama Dwitiya falls two days after Diwali Puja. Yamraj, the lord of death, is worshipped on Yama Dwitiya along with Chitragupta and Yama-Doots, the subordinates of Lord Yamraj.
 
This day is celebrated as Bhai Duj or Bhau Beej. Interestingly in this year, on November 16, three tithis come within 24 hours. The Pratipada ends at 7.06 am while Dwitiya or Bhai Duj starts after 7.06 am and ends on 03:56 am on November 17 and Tritiya Tithi begins after. This means November 16, from Sunrise to Sunrise on November 17; there will be three Tithis as per lunar calendar. Astrologers across the country are busy in calculating the effects of this day.
