NMC’s doorstep edn initiative provides silver lining to students

 Lockdown might have closed schools, but it did not deter NMC from launching taking education to doorsteps of haves not in city where one such class is on.

Bridging the gap in time of pandemic for haves not in society who found themselves at sea due to non-availability of technological aids, civic teachers engaged the students of NMC-run schools in home schooling. For those studying in civic schools, even access to mobile was a hard thing to come due to poverty and other issues. Faced with the challenge of ensuing continuos study of such students, NMC teachers went to doorsteps of their children and conducted community classes.
 
Along side on-line classes, the teachers also paid visit to students’ houses and taught them regular lessons. Aim was to ensure these students do not loose out on education. Preeti Mishrikotkar, Education Officer, initiated the project called ‘Doors of Education Students’ after discussion with senior NMC officials. As a result, teachers of the corporation are giving lessons by going to the residential areas of the students who cannot take on-line education. A total of 364 civic teachers are working under ‘Shikshan Vidyarthyanchya Dari’ initiative to bring students together in public places and impart them lessons by following social distance norms. Students in slum areas in particular are being taught at their convenience.
 
Anita Jain, Rajni Satpute, Parveen Siddiqui of Garib Nawaz Urdu Primary School, Badrunnisa Begum of Azad Nagar Urdu Primary School Premises) Rekha Badhel (Kapil Nagar Vasti), Madhavi Aurangabadkar and Shraddha Madavi of Ram Nagar Upper Primary School (Pandharabodi Vasti), Kalpana Deshmukh of Priyadarshani Upper Primary School (Navin Futala), Uma Maheshwari and Sumati Parihar of Ravi Nagar Upper Primary School (Jatashankar Mandir), Shivangaon Marathi are regularly conducting classes. There are a total of 364 primary school teachers including Vidya Wankhede and this initiative of civic body has got good response from students and parents.
 
Students Benefited: About 16,357 students of various classes of civic schools have been benefited due to on-line classes being held for Classes VIII to HSC through the app. A seven day training camp was held for teachers through expert guides. The Department of Education is requesting weekly reports of on-line and off-line education through school inspectors. In addition, parental visits were also planned to keep them aware of progress of their wards. The parents have expressed their satisfaction for civic body's initiative to ensure their wards do not lag out on education front during the lockdown period. A total of 16,357 students have participated in this activity.
