MP Govt to bring law against ‘love jihad; 5-yr RI for offenders

THE Madhya Pradesh Government is up in arms against forcible religious conversion done in the name of marriages, normally known as ‘love jihad’. In this regard, the BJP Government is preparing to bring a Bill in next Assembly session. The Bill has a provision to declare the offence as non-bailable and proposes five years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) for main offender. Likewise, there is a provision of five years imprisonment for co-accused as well.
 
This was stated by Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Dr Narottam Mishra while interacting with mediapersons. Dr Mishra said that MP Government is preparing for Dharma Swantantrya Vidheyak 2020. He told that forcible marriage, religious conversion (in the name of marriage) and marriages through fraud and temptation will attract five years’ rigorous imprisonment.
 
The offence will be cognizable and non-bailable. There will be also provision in the Bill to declare null and void those marriages which are done for religious conversion via force, fraud and temptation. Under the Bill, it will be mandatory to give complaint to person forced for religious conversion or his parents or brother, sisters. Moreover, it will be necessary for religious person doing religious conversion to inform district magistrate one month in advance. This Bill will be tabled in next Assembly session.
