Shiva clinches first Vid-level online chess title, eighth overall

IT’S Shiva again! Shiva Iyer, the upcoming chess player of the city has been in striking form since last three months. Shiva stamped his authority on the online chess tournaments being conducted under the banner of Nagpur District Chess Association and Power Chess Academy. Continuing his rich form, Shiva annexed another online title, his first Vidarbha level on Sunday. Missing the earlier two tournaments organised by Power Chess Academy as he was busy with other online competitions, Shiva, making his maiden entry in Kisanrao Chavan Memorial Vidarbha Level Open Blitz Chess Championship, registered nine out of nine wins to emerge clear winner.
 
“I had committed my participation in other tournaments hence I had to skip this Vidarbha level meets. But now I was not playing hence I participated and I am happy with the title,” Shiva told ‘The Hitavada’ after his win. With this win, 18-year-old Shiva has grabbed his fifth straight online title and overall eight since the online meet began amid lockdown. He has won five online blitz titles, two rapid titles organised by Nagpur District Chess Association and one Vidarbha level meet organised by Power Chess Academy.
 
Total 38 players from Amravati, Gadchiroli, Chandrapur, Buldhana and Nagpur participated in this competition which was organised through lichess.org platform. The Dhanwate National College student Shiva was followed by Jay Sawalakhe with 8 points while the third position was secured by Suhan Deshpande also of Nagpur with 7. The best female awards were given to Aastha Turankar of Nagpur, Anjali Pawar of Amravati and Rashi Wairagade from Nagpur. This tournament was conducted under the supervision of IA Deepak Chavan and FA Umesh Panbude.
