CHANDRAPUR, Chandrapur City unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) paid rich tributes to Birsa Munda on the occasion of his birth anniversary, recently. The programme was held at Shaheed Smarak in District Central Jail as well as at ST Workshop Square in the city. BJP City President Dr Mangesh Gulwade, General Secretary Rajendra Gandhi, Subhash Kasangottuwar, Ravindra Gurnule, Corporator Shila Chavan, Jyoti Gedam, Chandrakala Soyam, Sheetal Kulmethe, Maya Uike, Vice President, Ganesh Gedam, Ramkumar Akapeliwar, Devanand Kan-nake, Sopan Vaikar, Rakesh Bomawar, Purushottam Sahare were present present on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Gulwade said that Birsa Munda was born on November 15, 1875 in the village of Ulihatu in Rachi district of Jharkhand. His mother’s name was Karmi Hatu and his father’s name was Sugana Munda.
 
 
Birsa Munda was brilliant in studies. His name was changed to Birsa David to get enrollment in the the school, but he opposed the move and stood up against the British and the conversion. He also started creating awareness for the protection of tribal culture. He struggled to end superstition among people. When Britishers imposed Forest Act 1882, that deprived the tribals of their land, Birsa Munda started the Ulgulan Movement. His efforts have helped the tribals to retain their rights over their lands, water and forest. His fight against the British was decisive and path-breaking.
 
His struggle laid down the ideal for other to follow and he was bestowed the title of Bhagwan. Dr Gulwade called upon the new generation to follow the ideals of Revolutionary Birsa Munda. Subhash Kasangottuwar conducted the proceedings of the function and expressed a vote of thanks. Several of BJP workers were also present during the programme.
