Lots of good news coming as far as MBBS seats in Maharashtra are concerned. With Datta Meghe Medical College (DMMC), Wanadongri, getting approval from Ministry of Education and the information included in Gazette, the Vidarbha’s MBBS intake has jumped to 1,850. DMMC has been included in the seat matrix and students can opt for it in second round. The college has created record by virtue of being the very first couple of attempts made in the country under the consortium scheme. Last year Central Government had increased 50 MBBS seats of every Medical College being run by Government in the country due to which Vidarbha got 300 more seats taking the tally to 1,000. In Maharashtra, 350 more seats added this year taking the total to 4,330. This doesn’t include the seats from private medical colleges.

Board of Governors in supersession of the Medical Council of India (MCI) had issued an amendment notification to establishment of the Medical College Regulations, 1999, notification. The scheme of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) had been inked with an objective of increasing the participation of the private sector for establishing more number of Medical Colleges in the country as envisaged by the NITI Aayog and the Government of India. In covenant to the same Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences (DMIMS) (Deemed to be University) has formed a registered consortium by the name Meghe-SMS Health Consortium having Meghe Group and Sancheti Group as the members. Being eligible under above-mentioned provisions, application for new medical college under the consortium scheme to MCI and for off campus for the deemed university to Ministry of Education were moved simultaneously.

It is prudent to note that it was one of the very first couple of attempts made in the country, one by Meghe-SMS Group in Nagpur and another Tata and Manipal Groups in Tatanagar Jharkhand. MCI granted Letter of Permission to the proposed Datta Meghe Medical College after due assessment with 150 intake for MBBS students under the Deemed to be University. In the meanwhile, Ministry of Education Ministry of Education finally considering the requirement of medical colleges in the country gave approval. A gazette notification for permitting deemed university to form consortium was issued by University Grants Commission (UGC) on November 18, 2020.

NKP Salve Institute of Medical Sciences that has intake of 150 is endeavouring to get 100 increased seats to take the number to 250. But this year it has 150 seats. Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College run by DMIMS has intake of 250 seats. Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS), Sewagram, Wardha, and Dr Punjabrao Deshmukh Medical College, Amravati, has the intake of 150 each. Now the intake of 150 of DMMC has been added to the total seats.
