Nearly, 5 per cent of population across districts of Durg Division (Durg, Balod, Bemetara, Rajnandgaon and Kabirdham) has been tested for COVID-19, as per the figures of Health Department. Out of these five districts under Durg division, maximum tests were held in Durg city, while the minimum tests were held in Kabirdham district. In comparison to Raipur Division, where around 10 per cent were covered under COVID-19 tests, it is low, but still higher than districts of other divisions consisting of Bastar, Bilaspur and Surguja. At present, there are 3,280 active cases of COVID-19 in all five districts of the division where maximum, around 48 per cent of above total cases are from Durg district (1,545), followed by Rajnandgaon with active cases of 1,063. In remaining three districts, Balod, Bemetara and Kabirdham, active cases have been identified less than 500 till Tuesday night.

Owing to the lack of testing equipment as well as trained manpower in the Health Department, apart from Durg and Rajnandgaon, other districts of the division have failed to perform tests of COVID-19 in large number. Over 2,000 COVID-19 tests undertaken in all five districts under Durg division in the last 48 hours, but it is not satisfactory as compared to districts of Raipur division, but still division has noticed an improvement in December than previous months of November as well as October in terms of testing, said Dr Gambhir Singh Thakur, the Chief Medical and Health Officer of Durg district and also the In-charge Officer of Health Department in Durg division. Meanwhile, doctors of the district have expressed their concern over the more virulent strain of COVID-19 segregated in United Kingdom and other European Countries.

“Both State and Durg division is making all arrangements to roll out the vaccine for COVID-19, but the pandemic virus is dynamic and dangerous. So far, prevention has proved to be the best to fight against it,” pointed Dr Anil Shukla, In-charge Medical Officer of COVID Care in the division. Meanwhile, after Raipur, Durg district reports second maximum number of COVID-19 Positive cases and also deaths from it.

On the other hand, Rajnandgaon district has reported sixth highest cases of COVID-19 after Raipur, Durg, Janjgir-Champa, Mungeli and Bilaspur. But still these two districts could not cover around 10% population to undergo COVID-19 tests. “We have made a plan to cover large number of populations especially people of 40 plus age categories as they are at risk of getting infection of COVID-19 owing to other health issues like diabetics, hypertension, cancer, HIV Positive, respiratory infection, heart problems and kidney ailments. Children and teens are safer and owing to high immune system, they are recovering faster than patients of 40 plus categories,” asserted Dr Thakur.
