Government Medical Colleges at Nagpur got total 33 more Post Graduate (PG) seats along with 3 seats to super speciality courses being run in Super Speciality Hospital. Thanks to Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, Principal Secretary and Dr T P Lahane, Director, Medical Education who acted fast. As per the new rule that was brought by the Academic Committee of Medical Council of India headed by Dr Vedprakash Mishra, three seats are given per one Professor, two seats to Associate Professor and one seat to Assitant Professor. To provide benefit to Government Medical Colleges, Dr Mishra Committee made further amendment according to which departments having Associate Professors who have completed three years and presented research papers became eligible to get three seats for such Associate Professors instead of two.

The number of Associate Professors with three years of experience in Government Medical College and Hospital and Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital have increased and these medical colleges got benefit of the same. Dr Vedprakash Mishra while talking to ‘The Hitavada’ said, “Government Medical Colleges run with several deficiencies. I don’t want to cast an aspersion on anybody, but the process in Government machinery runs slow like after sanctioning the posts are not filled and after MCI inspection the loophole is noticed.

This loophole noticed by MCI resulted into the reduction of seats. Considering all these aspects we introduced some more changes. For example, the unit having no Professor but has Associate Professor with three years experience plus two Assistant Professors became eligible to get 5 seats of PG.” Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, and Dr T P Lahane, had instructed all the medical colleges to submit the proposal in the same way before May 2019. After receiving proposal, unlike in the past Medical Education department swung into action and got sanctioned more number of PG seats in medical colleges in Maharashtra.

IGGMCH got maximum benefit as they got 31 PG seats viz Pharmacology (Three), PSM (Three), Microbiology (four), Biochemistry (five), Anaesthesia (Five), Surgery (Seven). In Super Speciality Cardiology Department got two more seats in DM, the super speciality course. In Gastroenterology, one seat has been added to present one. Dr Sajal Mitra, Dean, GMCH and Dr Ajay Keolia, Dean, IGGMCH expressed satisfaction over the increase in PG seats. They said, “This would not only boost the confidence of the teachers in Government medical colleges in State but also provide opportunity to the students who can’t afford to go to private medical colleges.”
