235 bikers killed due to head injury in mishaps last year

Completely ignoring the objection raised by a Congress leader, Raipur Police continue its drive against violators of traffic rules and intensify its efforts for ensuing mandatory use of life-saving helmet by two-wheelers while driving. Even as the State Capital had witnessed significant numbers of deaths in road accidents due to head injury, objection raised by a Congress MLA in Raipur came as a shocker for everyone including Raipur Police, but the ‘men-in-uniform’ carrying on its campaign and fined around 9,000 violators within 8 days.

After commencement of the campaign on February 8, Raipur Traffic Police have fined around 5,000 motorists for not wearing helmet and requested them to use the headgear for their personal safety, said a senior police officer. “In 2019, the State Capital witnessed 458 accidental deaths in 2,146 road accidents. Of 458 persons died in the road accident, 235 motorists died due to head injury.

Precious lives in such a number lost in road fatalities is very tragic and it could be saved if people would develop the habit of wearing helmet compulsory at the time of ride,” said Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic) M R Mandavi. The objective of drive by traffic police here is to make people comply rules so that accidents could be prevented and make use of life-saving headgear mandatory, added the ASP.

There are people who come up with suggestion that use of the life-saving helmet should not be made mandatory within the city, but its long-term consequence should not be overlooked as fatal road accidents also happens within the city, said a traffic cop, who was part of the ongoing campaign. In 2019, the State Capital witnessed 458 accidental deaths and 1,579 persons injured in 2,146 accidents while the number of accidental deaths in 2018 was 427 and 420 in 2017. As many as 415 persons were killed in road accident reported in 2016 and 448 died in 2015.
