Joint replacement is safe surgery and due to lack of awareness people fear for surgery, said Joint Replacement expert and Orthopaedic at NH MMI Narayana Super Speciality Hospital Dr Ankur Gupta. He informed that arthritis affects the functioning of knee joint and its treatment is easily available. Dr Gupta said that by adopting a better life style, balanced diet and regular exercise one can avoid such problems at an early stage.

When the cartilage gets damaged joint replacement is a good option. During the surgery, complete joint is not replaced but the surfaces of bones are made smooth and artificial cartilage made of metal and polymer is replaced by damaged cartilage. The metallic cartilage works as natural cartilage. It makes walking pain free. During operation, patient is partially conscious. After operation patient is asked to make knee movements while seating on a chair and next day the patient is allowed to walk with walker which is gradually eliminated and patient starts walking independently.

It everything is fine, patient is discharged on third or fourth day. When patient stops walking due to excessive pain the surgery is recommended. Result of surgery in patients of 50 to 80 years is positive. If patient is physically fit operation can be done at the age of 80 years also.
