Farmers gherao Collectora

Farmers from over a dozen villages laid siege of the District Collector’s office here demanding resuming of paddy procurement. Due to non-availability of sacks for paddy collection/storing, paddy procurement was reportedly suspended in many parts of the district leading to a large scale resentment among farmers. The farmers from Lalpur, Kapa, Damapur, etc., on Wednesday evening sat on dharna at both the entrances of District Collectorate for over 4 hours.

They were not allowing any senior officials, including the District Collector, to move out of office. The farmers alleged that only one day is remaining for paddy procurement and over 10,000 farmers from the district have not been able to sell their paddy. Demanding extension of paddy procurement date along with procurement of every grain of paddy produced by each and every farmer, the farmers here gheraoed the collectorate. They also stated that if their demands are not fulfilled, they will knock the doors of Chhattisgarh High Court on February 21 apart from sitting on indefinite dharna.
