“Through the self-help groups, women are getting employment. Many women have started their enterprise and have become businesswomen. Women are becoming self-reliant through self-help groups,” said Ravindra Thakre, District Collector. Thakre was addressing the gathering after inaugurating the State-level exhibition of goods made by women’s self-help groups (SHGs). National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development (NABARD) and Utkarsh Foundation have organised the exhibition at Jerryl Lawns. Rashmi Barve, President of Zilla Parishad (ZP); U D Shirsalkar, Chief General Manager of NABARD; P M Parlewar, Director, MSME; Gajendra Bharti; Maithili Kowe, District Development Manager of NABARD, also graced the occasion with their presence. NABARD has been helping the cause of poverty alleviation in the society, said Thakre. The pace of women empowerment has increased tremendously in rural areas.
 
The women from rural areas are lacking in marketing of quality products. Through the initiatives of NABARD, women are getting platforms to showcase their entrepreneurship, he said. In all, 15 districts of Maharashtra have participated in the exhibition. Fifty stalls are from Nagpur district alone. The women’s SHGs have displayed 60 items in the exhibition.
 
These include items made by rural artisans, lifestyle products, purses, bangles, clothes, sarees, kurta, silk clothes, incense sticks, dhoop sticks etc. Besides, there are food stalls showcasing delicacies from various parts of Maharashtra. The delicacies range from vegetarian dishes like ‘Pithhla-Bhakri’ from Vidarbha to rice ‘Bhakri’ from Khandesh, ‘Puranpoli’ from Marathwada, ‘Daal-bhaat paanage’, to non-vegetarian dishes like fish fry, chicken-Bhakri, chicken-pakora etc. Further, there are different kinds of chutneys, pickles, foodgrains grown through organic farming etc. Snehlata Sawarkar from Karanji Kaji in Wardha district has displayed organic Mushroom, mushroom powder, pickles, chutney etc. The exhibition will continue till February 23. Kowe appealed to the people to visit the exhibition and encourage women from rural areas.
