RAIPUR,

After sudden rains in C’garh, temperature goes down record 11 degree celsius

MERCURY took a sharp nosedive on Thursday across State after sudden rains took people by a chilling surprise, thereby prompting them to shift themselves into cosy and warm winter wears, which had gone to drawers and closets just few days ago. Quite strikingly, normal lives were pulverised, as the chilling waves shivered the capital Raipur with temperature taking a sharp dive of 11 degrees, a record weather phenomenon in the entire state recorded by the Met Department here.

Though the weather shift was much anticipated by the weathermen, most of the people were shockingly surprised as bone-numbing chilling waves crept deep into their bodies and kept them indoors for most of the times. But, not all was that bad for many, as careless youngsters unfazed by weather change took to the streets and all other prominent hotspots to enjoy the ‘chills with thrills.’ Be it Telibandha Marine Drive or Chaupati near Netaji Subhash Stadium or in far-wide spread Naya Raipur, all these spots were buzzing with youngsters, specially girls, who were spotted relishing with their favourite hot served delicacies like ‘chaat’ and ‘noodles’ while some preferred ‘adrak wali chai’ and coffee at other popular places of hangout.

The sudden shift of climate, however, led to inconvenience for air flyers here at Swami Vivekananda Airport as dense fog created due to rains affected the flight operations. The visibility was reduced to 200 meter, on Monday morning at the runway at 8.12 am owing to which one flight had to be diverted to Nagpur. The inclement weather hampered flight operations for nearly an hour and normalcy could be restored at 9.10 am only after the requisite visibility of 1200 meter was achieved. Apart from chilly conditions, moderate rainfall at many places across State slowed down the normal activities.

Durg was the dampest district recording highest rainfall of 6.2mm followed with Raipur receiving 3.6mm rainfall. The influence of cold conditions along with brief spell of showers brought down the maximum temperature in many districts. ‘Cold Day’ phenomenon developed at Raipur, and Durg and Bilaspur with drop in temperature by 11 degree and 10 degrees respectively forced people indoors. Talking to this scribe, Senior Meteorologist of Meteorological Centrer, Raipur H P Chandra informed that there is little chance of getting respite from the bone-chilling conditions across the state for next 24 hours. The impact of ongoing confluence of Easterly and South Easterly winds has made conditions favourable for formation of clouds which will enhance the existing weather conditions.

A cyclonic circulation that lies over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining interior Odisha, the neighbouring states of Chhattisgarh has also extended the existing sudden change to cold conditions. Besides warning of thundershowers and possibility of hailstorm at one or two places in Northern areas, the state is expected to receive moderate to medium rainfall at many places on February 7. The sky will be cloudy over Raipur city with maximum and minimum temperature expected around 22 degrees and 17 degree Celsious on Friday, the Met Centre stated.
