4.0 quake jolts Sukma, Chhindgarh, Malkangiri

MILD tremors measuring 4.0 on richer scale were felt in the bordering districts of Chhattisgarh and Odisha on Saturday morning. No loss of life or property has been reported so far during the three-second earthquake. Mild shocks were experienced at 11.14.44 am in Surguja and Bastar district of Chhattisgarh and Malkangiri area of Odisha.
 
The epicentre of the earthquake was about 40 kms from Jagdalpur, Senior Meteorologist at Meteorological Center, informed Raipur Hari Prasad Chandra. “Since it appears to be a low intensity earthquake with its epicentre nearly 40 kms away from Jagdalpur, secondary shocks - a common phenomenon - were not felt. Generally, limited after-shocks were recorded after the low intensity earthquake”, H P Chandra said. The sudden tremors in Sukma and Bastar districts mainly Sukma, Kukanar, Tongpal and Darbha areas and at some places in Dantewada created panic.
 
People were forced to come out of their houses, offices and other workplaces. Senior Meteorologist H P Chandra said that a similar earthquake was felt 34km East of Chennai at 11:15:09 am, just few seconds after the panicky tremors recorded in Sukma, Bastar and Malkangiri districts. However, there is no connectivity between the two earthquakes which has a distance of around 1,100 to 1,200 km. Under the present intensity of 4.0 on Richer scale, there is no chance of major destruction in the earthquake prone area. Damages are likely to be inflicted on huts and old houses in 10km area around the epicenter of the earthquake, Chandra added.
 
Tremors were felt in Pandripani and Dharampura areas of Jagdalpur, Chhindgarh and Kukanar in Sukma district apart from Malkangiri district in Odisha. In Chhindgarh, the earthquake tremors were felt only for one second. Raju Kashyap, a resident of Gram Panchayat Nenmur under Tokapal block said they were watching television when tremors were felt at 11:17 am.
 
Family members including children rushed out of the house. Vijay Gupta of Darbha block said there was some sound below the earth and this followed the earthquake. Gupta said that his mother was sitting on a chair that was shaken, indicating earth-quake. Sources informed that it was after 30-years Bastar people witnessed tremors of earthquake. 4.2 magnitude earthquake was felt in Malkangiri district, around 11.15 this morning. Mathili, Khairput and Kudumuluguma and some areas of Malkangiri felt the quake, triggering panic among people however no major damage or casualty was reported. Cracks appeared on the SP office. Earthquake of Magnitude 4.0 occurred on March 21, 2020, 11:14:45 IST with Latitude18.7 N and Longtitude 82.1 E and depth 10 kilometer in Malkangiri of Odisha, according to a report given by District Magistrate.
