RAIPUR,

THERE was an overwhelming response across the state for the ‘Janta Curfew’ call given by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to break the Virus chain in the fight against Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). All offices in government and private sector along with shops, malls, markets, pubs, hotels, public services including the Railways came to staggering halt today during the public curfew. Over 700 minibuses along with 210 low floor city-buses, 3000 cabs and approximately 12000 autorickshaws/minidoors all remained stationed in support of the Janta Curfew across the state.

The Janta Curfew was called from 7am till 9pm but its effect was apparently visible since yesterday as vehicles gradually disappeared from roads and shops lowered their shutters. The call given by the Prime Minister, wherein, he had urged the citizens to become a part of this nationwide campaign and make the fight against Novel Coronavirus COVID-19, a success received unprecedented support across the country. He had said that it is people’s determination which would help in defeating the pandemic. Accordingly on the call of the Prime Minister for staying home on Sunday, to fight the rapidly-spreading Coronavirus, people across the state took the call very seriously and putting the onus of fulfilling the same on themselves people remained inside and none stepped out.

However, institutions, shops and establishments dealing in essential services and goods remained open while all other markets and establishments were closed. Due to Janta Curfew, all air carriers including Indigo, Vistara, Air India, etc suspended their domestic operations on Sunday. However, in bus stands and railway stations few passengers were seen trying to move to other places from the capital but remained stranded in railway stations due to suspension of train and bus services. During this time there was a eerie silence and the roads wore a deserted look and no one could be spotted barring a few street dogs and stray cattle. Even the movement of police vehicles was very limited and it was a complete stand still and the Capital Raipur looked as if it was a deserted place.

The same was the condition elsewhere also, in Bhilai-Durg, Bilspur, Korba and other major cities and towns people were bolted inside voluntarily. The Prime Minister has also asked the people to stand in their doorways and clap for five minutes in appreciation for the services being provided by personnel engaged in direct combat with COVID-19, which was also complied overwhelming by the people in the state as people not only in the capital but across the state came out into their balconies and doors in colonies not only clapping their hands, ringing bells, beating drums, clanged utensils bursting crackers, and even reciting mantras. In all colonies and residential areas across the state people came out on the doors and expressed the gratitude to the health workers.

It was a great gesture by the people encouraging all those in their fight against the Novel Coronavirus. They also resolved that the fight will continue under the state government’s guidance who has already initiated many steps to check the spread of the virus.
