Retail vendors selling vegetables at higher rates

AS the weekly markets have been closed due to the panic of coronavirus, retailers are making hay of it and selling the agriculture produce at higher rates. However, sources said that the supply of vegetables in the wholesale market like Mahatma Phuley Vegetable Market is consistent but due to paucity of workers who are also fear-stricken, the supply to retail market has taken a beating. Ram Mahajan, Secretary of the Mahatma Phuley Vegetable and Fruits Adatiya Welfare Association while talking to The Hitavada said, “The supply from local farmers was good on Saturday.
There were around 225 vehicles which unloaded the vegetables in the market. On Sunday, due to Janta curfew, the market was completely closed.” However, on Monday, only 40 vehicles arrived in the market. He attributed the reason to less number of workers who refrained from loading the vegetables at the growing centres. Government has cautioned people not to assemble in groups due to outbreak of coronavirus, Mahajan said. Vegetables falls under the category of essential needs and farmers without any fear should bring them to market by taking precautionary measures directed by Health Ministry. must bring their vegetable to the market.
The rates quoted in the wholesale market on Monday were Brinjal- Rs 10 to Rs 15 per kg, Green Chilli- Rs 20 to Rs 30 per kg, Coriander Leaves- Rs 40 per kg, Tomato- Rs 20 per kg, Capsicum- Rs 40 per kg, Lady Finger- Rs 40 per kg and Pumpkin at Rs 40 per kg.
